If Only

Ever had one of those weeks when you think everything is conspiring against you. Each time the results were printed out I seamed to slip down the rankings, printer and scoreboard just couldn’t agree. The wind finally fizzled on the last day to ensure we couldn’t finish the gold fleet round, that was until prize giving was over, then it kicked in and blew harder than we’d seen all week.

Only the bronze and silver fleets got to sail before the wind finally dropped well below our racing minimum. The gold fleet stayed on hold and had to carry average points to the final score sheets. As I saw the final results came off the printer, I’d managed to slip yet another spot in the rankings, not bad considering we didn’t even sail.

The final ranking may not have worked in my favour, yet there was still plenty to celebrate. Last year Zara Davis asked me to help her go faster, with each round she has gradually moved closer to the queens of speed Karin Jaggi and Valerie Ghibaudo.

The final runs of the closing round saw Zara post two runs that would give her the first win she’d been driving for. Zara needed another couple of rounds to change the overall third place, but that confidence will be carried on to the next rounds in the Canaries and Namibia.

As the prize giving came to a close the wind finally kicked in, for the first time in a week we finally saw smaller sails out on the water. The following day saw us sailing longer than we had all week, while frustrating it gave us time to sail to the other bays further down wind.

I few out on Friday with Farrell, Peter and Zara, we had to fly through Amsterdam as there aren’t any direct flight from the UK, this is supposed to change for next year. If it does, Karpathos would be a good bet for some flat-water sailing.
