Second week in Vass and the rest of the family have come out, its funny but the kids don’t windsurf anywhere else but in Vassiliki. This week turned out to be a real break through for Reece. He joined Joe’s group and it wasn’t long before she had him planning in foot straps and harness. Best of all I learnt that there is something better than windsurfing, windsurfing with the family.
The family weren’t alone; they also come out with another family. We met the Dowmans through kid’s football and have become good friend over the years. Steve was a professional footballer and before this week his only connection to windsurfing was to ask how I could be a pro windsurfer at my size, to be fair, it did take him a year before felt we knew each other a month.
We’d been snowboarding together, but wanted a holiday with a bit more sun, I showed him last years Vassiliki video and he and the family were soon booked in. His got a competitive streak so I knew he couldn’t just sit on the beach, but would be bitten by the windsurfing bug.
Steve, wife Debbie, and son Michel joined a few other beginners for their first attempt at windsurfing while younger brother Jack joined Aaron in the kids club. That took a bit of pressure off Aaron, now there was another pair of eye’s follow Nancy’s every move. Looking at the feedback from last week’s pix, these two aren’t alone so there are a few more pix of the lovely Nancy at the end of the gallery.
It was a shame the wind dropped off towards the end of the week, everyone was getting on so well that were looking for the stronger wind. Steve was so close to planning I took him out on the tandem just to get the feel of how it could be, but with the coach waiting for us to load our cases the wind finally arrived to give Steve his own solo planning run.
For sure the boys would get on well, but Debbie isn’t so keen on the water, particularly when she’s out of he depth, so I wouldn’t have been surprised if she hadn’t continued the full week. I couldn’t have been further from the truth, she made every lesson and more, bizarrely it was Debbie who finally got my whole family on the water.
Sally tried windsurfing before me, but has never stepped on a board since, the more I pushed the further she got from trying. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard her say she was going out. At least I now know where Samantha gets “this is easy” laid back style from.
Guess Samantha would push on a bit further, but having a couple of girl friends, Sam and Aisling out with her, the gossip about the instructors took priority over lessons, but that’s eighteen-year-old girls for ya.
This was an all time first, we were all on the water, and even better it was smiles all round, this wasn’t just windsurfing, but windsurfing with the family. While I hope it will happen again the next couple of weeks will tell. I’m off to Sotovento on Wednesday, but I suspect that Steve maybe taking my van to the water soon, hopefully well see a few more family member following him.
