White Island
29/10/07

Prickly Pear is a tiny island just upwind from the Sunsail Centre and for a day it felt like ours. It’s been a fantastic week; everyone’s been having a fantastic time, though it has officially aged Granddad. The week ended with his birthday, not that I got to see much of it thanks to a brother in-law, two brothers and the rum bar. Always said I wasn’t the drinker in the family.

The boys play a lot of cricket at home and with the 20/20 being played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium they wanted to see a few balls go down the wicket. With some big names in cricket being banded around it gave them that extra interest to go, but it back at Sunsail that they finally got to see the big name himself, Sir Vivian Richards.

The weather’s been a bit fickle this week, I only managed to windsurf a couple of days but for the first time it didn’t really matter. Even when the heavens opened it still didn’t dampen our spirits, there’s still plenty to do. The lack of sun towards the end of the week did nothing to lower the temperature, though I welcomed the shade as awoke with the worst hangover I’ve had in years.

Everything was going fine until we realised it was Granddads birthday, with the time difference it was already tomorrow back home. After the usual toasts everyone headed for bed, until there was just the four of us left, Brother in-law David and Brother Robert and Mark. Think it must have been about this time when it all went wrong for me, I shouldn’t have tried to keep up.

If it wasn’t for the hangover this trip has been great for my speed. With the record attempt at Southend no far away I’ve given the year a bit of thought to see where I can get that extra bit of speed. To make sense of it I had to go back to last year before I started my diet. Though its been great to shed some kilos, it hasn’t been good for my speed.

The extra weight was like a weigh jacket, I was used to sailing with it, but without it I lacked some power. It isn’t that I need to put the weight back on, but change my training to replace weight with strength. All my training has just been about loosing weight, but I think that has to change to resistance training.

Sunsail have a fantastic gym for a hotel, and since we arrived I’ve been in there as six every morning. That’s been helped with some family rivalry from Mark; thankfully he caved in the morning before my hangover. Apart from ensuring the indulgences for the week don’t affect the waistline, I’ve got into it and will push in this direction for the rest of the year, at least I’ll find out which sort of training is best for me.

Southend Update
The number of requests for a spot at Southend has far out weighed the number of spots we have available. We haven’t put out an entry form yet as I wanted to have a couple of items confirmed before we went ahead. The timing equipment is almost finished, but the WSSRC require a special clock to be incorporated and there are only a few available. Yesterday we finally had one confirmed and should be flown in the next days. Once the WSSRC confirm the equipment is good to go we’ll send out the entry form.

Everyone that has been emailing from the website will get the form first, so to give you a heads up, you’ll be needing a couple of pix to send it with it, head and shoulder and a couple of sailing pix. We’ll be wanting them to go on the website for all the competitors.
