I joined Peter Hart in Egypt for one of his windsurfing master classes; apart from a week of sailing in warm waters it was the perfect opportunity to top up his picture gallery for future magazine articles. Baby bay is only separated from the open see by the reef, but that’s enough to make it one of the best stretches of water in the world to master your gybes.
It never ceases to amaze me, but so many travel to Dahab but never venture out of the lagoon, particularly when its just the other side of the spit the water is smoother and the wind more consistent. For those unsure of upwind abilities, Baby bay is only a few steps away and the rewards out way the walk.
Being so good it can get busy at times, but stick around at lunchtime and the bay is your own. We also joined the instructors in a few early morning sessions before they opened up, though most of them wanted to see me on the point with my camera.
My big lens is my favourite, it not only gets the best results but inspires others to get behind the camera, good job, otherwise I’d never get in the pix. Emily Hoile got right into it and was soon taking some great shots, sometimes its better to have an eye for a shot than a head full of technical manuals. Though I seam to lack a bit of both when it come to portrait pix, but fortunately Nancy makes up for any lack of imagination.
The one day the wind let us down we went snorkelling at the Blue Hole, its like putting your head into a fish tank, the reef is very much alive. Just as we were leaving there was a group of free divers disappearing into the abyss, I’ve seen the film deep blue but even though I’ve now seen them first hand, it’s still hard to believe how long they stay down.
Great week with even better company
